Chicago will send left-hander Chris Sale to the hill opposite newly-acquired KC righty James Shields. Sale was 17-and-8 with a 3.05 ERA last season in 29 starts. The Cubs start the 2013 season this afternoon in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. The Cubs will send right-hander Jeff Samardzija to the hill opposite veteran A.J. Burnett. Samardzija went 9-and-13 with a 3.81 ERA last season in 28 starts. First pitch is slated for 12:35 this afternoon.
The Cubs will be without second baseman Darwin Barney when the season starts today. Barney will miss the contest against the Pirates with a laceration on his left knee. The injury was sustained in Saturday's exhibition in Houston and required five stitches.
