Jake Arrieta tossed eight shutout innings and the Cubs held on for a 5-3 win over the Padres. Arrieta scattered two hits and three walks while striking out six to improve to 16-and-5. Aroldis Chapman had to come on in the ninth to earn his eighth save. Addison Russell and Kris Bryant homered for Chicago, which is 80-and-45 on the year.
Wil Myers knocked in a run and scored in the ninth for the Padres. Christian Friedrich fell to 4-and-10.
The Cubs go for the 3-game sweep in San Diego this afternoon.
