Officials Warn of Invisible Danger of Carbon Monoxide

CHICAGO - The Illinois State Fire Marshal urges furnace checks, filter changes, and ensuring CO and smoke alarms work this month. Carbon monoxide, an odorless gas, poses a threat detected only by specific devices. In 2023, Illinois Fire Departments responded to over 20,000 CO calls. CO poisoning symptoms mimic flu, and signs include condensation, sluggish pets, and odors. Residents should evacuate if you suspect CO, smell gas, or if an alarm activates. Homeowners should keep vents clear and properly maintain heating equipment. Ensure a three-foot safety zone around heating equipment and test alarms monthly. Never use ovens for heating, turn off heaters when leaving, and install CO detectors on each floor. And always remember, CO detectors have a limited lifespan.
