Planning for a doctor’s visit is one of eight strategies that can improve the healthcare partnership between an individual and his or her physician. These strategies will be examined at a program entitled, “Partnering with Your Doctor” to be held Wednesday, September 8, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Alzheimer’s Association – Central Illinois Chapter, Rock River Branch, 93 S. Hennepin, Dixon. Reservations are required by September 7th by calling the Rock River Branch at 285.1100.

The 3rd Annual Regional Business Expo is Thursday, September 9th, 3 to 7p.m. at the former Menard’s building on Illinois 251 and 173 in Machesney Park. The expo is free and open to the public. It will showcase and connect hundreds if organizations and is expected to draw 2,000 business professionals. Partnering in the event are chambers from Byron, Dekalb, Freeport, Beloit, Oregon and Belvidere

The Alzheimer’s Association – Rock River Branch is looking for individuals in their 40’s and older and healthy seniors to participate in a new healthy aging program, “Train Your Brain,” to begin September 13th. The six-week program will meet Mondays, Sept. 13 – Oct. 18, from 6:00 – 7:30 pm, at the Rock River Office, 93 S. Hennepin, Dixon. Cost for the program is $30 per person. Participants will receive the Big Brain Puzzle Book, handouts for each session, and a certificate upon completion. Registration is required by Sept. 10 by calling 285.1100.

Rochelle Township High School Education Foundation 4th Annual “30 Men Who Cook” fundraiser is Saturday, September 11 at Koritz Field, Rochelle Municipal Airport. It will be held in the new hangar facility beginning at 6p.m. This is the RTHS Education Foundation’s only annual fundraising event. Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois announces the 6th annual Thin Mint Sprint Event, presented by Joseph Behr & Sons, on Saturday, September 11, at Camp McCormick in Stillman Valley. The Thin Mint Sprint Event consists of an 8K run, 2-mile family fun walk/run, and 4-mile Tough Cookie trail run. For an additional challenge, participants can sign up to "Do the Double," which includes both the 8K and trail run. The trail run begins at 7:30 a.m., with the 8K run and family fun walk/run beginning at 9 a.m. Directions and registration forms are available online at www.girlscoutsni.org.
To support our Girl Scouts in making the world a better place, participants are urged to bring an old pair of running shoes for recycling.
All proceeds from the Thin Mint Sprint Event go to support programs for over 22,000 Girl Scouts in 16 local communities.

The Rochelle Hispanic Heritage Festival and LaReina Pageant committee is looking for members and sponsors. The celebration begins September 15th. “Reverse Mortgages,” will be the featured topic of the Alzheimer’s Association Brown Bag Bites Lunch and Learn Program to be held Wednesday, Sept. 15th, from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. at the Rock River Branch, 93 S. Hennepin, Dixon. The program is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch to the program. At Lifescape’s upcoming Senior EXPO, the AARP Driver Safety Program will be presented in a classroom setting. The course will be held on September 16 and 17 at the Indoor Sports Center between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Attendees may be eligible for an insurance discount upon course completion (your insurance agent would have more details). By taking the course, drivers will learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate their vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting residents of the Rockford area to become Champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s by participating in the annual Memory Walk. The 2010 walk will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Rock Valley College, 3301 North Mulford Road, Rockford. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic that is now the seventh leading cause of death nationally and the fifth leading cause of death for those 65 and older in Illinois. It is estimated that someone in America develops Alzheimer's disease every 70 seconds. By mid-century someone will develop Alzheimer’s disease every 33 seconds. The Alzheimer’s Association - Central Illinois Chapter, is inviting Dixon area residents to become Champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s by participating in the Rock River Memory Walk to be held Saturday, Sept. 25 at Lowell Park, Dixon, at 9:00 a.m. The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk is an empowering event that gives participants an opportunity to be Champions by taking action and raising funds to fight Alzheimer’s. In addition to the 3 mile walk, prizes will be awarded to individuals and teams who raise the most funds for the event. Small nonprofit organizations at risk of losing their tax-exempt status because they failed to file required returns for 2007, 2008 and 2009 can preserve their status by filing returns by Oct. 15, 2010, under a one-time relief program. The IRS posted on a special page of IRS.gov the names and last-known addresses of these at-risk organizations, along with guidance about how to come back into compliance. The organizations on the list have return due dates between May 17 and Oct. 15, 2010, but the IRS has no record that they filed the required returns for any of the past three years.
