Chicago Baseball

The White Sox are off to Detroit where they start a three-game series with the Tigers tonight from Comerica Park. Jose Quintana gets the start for Chicago while the Tigers send ace Justin Verlander to the hill. This is the first meeting this season between the AL Central foes. They are scheduled to play 16 times after the All-Star break. First pitch is set for 6:08.

The Cubs return to Wrigley Field tonight to start a brief two-game series with the Angels.  All-Star Travis Wood gets the start for the Cubs while the Halos send Joe Blanton to the mound.  The teams split a two-game series in Anaheim in early June.  First pitch is set for 7:05.

Matt Garza may not be dealt away from the Cubs after all.  ESPN reports the pitcher has discussed a few contract options with the club that would keep him n Chicago. Garza is set to become an unrestricted free agent at season's end.  The Cubs will likely trade him or sign him to a new deal before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline.  Garza is 4-and-1 with a 3.45 ERA in nine starts this season.

Despite his selection, Cubs pitcher Travis Wood won't take part in next week's All-Star Game.  Wood is scheduled to pitch this Sunday and will not be available to participate in the contest.  It will be the first time since 1998 a Cub will enter the game knowing he won't play.  Sammy Sosa was selected that season but had an injured shoulder.  Ted Lilly was selected in 2009 but did not get into the game while Carlos Zambrano faced the same fate in 2006.
