For the 4th year in a row, a local favorite won the John Deere Golf Classic in Silvis. A birdie on the 2nd playoff hole Sunday gave Zach Johnson a come from behind win.
He defeated 3rd round leader Troy Matteson in the playoff as both golfers finished the 72-hole event at the TPC Deere Run at 20 under par. Johnson had a final round 6 under par 65 while Matteson shot a 3 under par 69.
Johnson, who was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and is on the Board of Directors for the John Deere Classic, won the tournament following a bunker shot from the fairway within a foot on the 2nd playoff hole. It was his 9th PGA win as he takes home a check worth $828,000.
Steve Stricker was attempting to win his 4th consecutive John Deere Classic yesterday. He shot a final round 1 under par 70 and finished 4 shots off the lead.
Tournament Officials believe that they were close in setting an attendance record at the John Deere Classic this year.
