Ryan Dempster and two relievers combined on a five-hitter as the Cubs shut out the Red Sox, 3-0. Dempster scattered four hits over seven innings to even his record at 3-and-3. Carlos Marmol worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to post his third save as Chicago took the opener of the three-game set at Wrigley Field. Steve Clevenger doubled in two runs in the first and David DeJesus singled in a run in the second for the Cubs. Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed three runs in six frames to take the loss. Scott Podsednik went 2-for-4 with a walk for Boston.
