NIU loses at Central Michigan, Kish wins at home

Central Michigan made 17 three-pointers as the Chippewas defeated the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team, 81-67, on Tuesday night at McGuirk Arena. Sophomore Eugene German  scored 21 points and junior Dante Thorpe scored 17 to pace the Huskies.

NIU shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field in the contest, including 67.9 percent (19-of-28) in the second half, but was unable to slow down Central Michigan from beyond the arc as the Chippewas shot 41.5 percent (17-of-41) from behind the three-point line.

Central Michigan (14-8, 3-6 MAC) jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead in the opening seven minutes of the contest, forcing a NIU timeout.

A pair of buckets from freshman Gairges Daow brought the Huskies within seven, 16-9, but the Chippewas answered back with the next four as they led, 20-9, just past the midway point of the opening half.

Daow finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Central Michigan’s lead grew to 31-15 before back-to-back baskets from German trimmed the CMU lead back to a dozen with 5:30 to play before the intermission.

A 10-2 run by the Chippewas pushed their lead to 20 before junior Levi Bradley (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) closed the scoring in the half with a basket to cut the Central Michigan lead to 41-23 at the half.

Bradley closed the contest with 13 points.

After the Central Michigan lead grew to 50-28, Thorpe scored five-straight for the Huskies, forcing a CMU timeout with 13:40 left. The NIU run reached 8-0 after the timeout as German knocked down a triple to trim the Chippewas lead to 50-36.

The Central Michigan lead grew back to 21 before seven-straight by the Huskies, five from Bradley and a layup by sophomore Noah McCarty  cut the CMU advantage to 65-51. The Chippewas answered with a triple, their 16th of the night, as the lead grew back to 17.

NIU (10-12, 3-6 MAC) made one more run to get within 13, but that was as close as the Huskies would get as Central Michigan closed out a 14-point victory.

Josh Kozinski scored a game-high 24 points for Central Michigan on 8-of-15 from three-point range. David DiLeo added 17 points, Cecil Williams had 13 points and Luke Meyer added 12 points.

The Huskies will return home on Saturday, Feb. 3, as NIU hosts Miami (Ohio). Game time against the RedHawks is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
