Justin Verlander struck out 11 in seven innings. Alex Wilson got the win and Francisco Rodriguez his 39th save. Detroit is tied with Baltimore for the second AL Wild Card spot.
Alex Avila hit a game-tying solo homer in the seventh for Chicago. Chris Beck took the loss. Chris Sale got no decision after pitching the first 8 innings.
