NIU loses 3rd MAC game

OXFORD, Ohio -- Freshman Marshawn Wilson  tied a career-high with 24 points and junior Aaric Armstead added 19 but the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team shot just 34 percent as a team as the Huskies fell, 72-59, to Miami on Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.

NIU (16-5, 5-3 MAC) trailed by just one at halftime but shot just 27.6 percent (8-of-29) after the intermission to finish the contest shooting 34 percent (17-of-50) from the field; Miami shot 46 percent (23-of-50) for the game.

“We were very disappointed with the start of the game,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. “When a team hasn’t been playing well like Miami it gives them confidence, they came out punching and we couldn’t stop them. It seemed like when we made a three and it looked like we were going to make a run, they made a three, and they made a lot of them at the end of the shot clock.

“When you go on the road in the MAC it is a dogfight, throw the records out. They were hungrier than us and I am disappointed in myself and in our team because our effort wasn’t where it should be.”

Senior Travon Baker  recorded three steals in the contest to set a new NIU record with 166 takeaways in his career.

Miami (7-14, 1-7 MAC) took an early eight-point lead, 15-7, on its third triple of the game with 13:48 to play in the first half until Wilson knocked down a triple to bring the Huskies back within five.

The RedHawks led by seven, 22-15, before a put back dunk by Armstead and a short jumper by freshman Jaylen Key (Milwaukee, Wis./Homestead) cut the Miami lead to just three, 22-19, with 8:22 left before the intermission.

Miami led by four, 29-25, until a 6-0 burst gave NIU its first lead of the contest. Wilson opened the run with a basket and senior Chuks Iroegbu  and sophomore Marin Maric each added a pair of free throws as the Huskies took a 31-29 lead with 2:35 remaining in the first half. The RedHawks answered with the next six to take a 35-31 lead before a triple from Armstead cut the Miami lead to one, 35-34, at the break.

The RedHawks opened the second half with an 8-2 burst to take a 43-36 lead; NIU answered with the next five through Armstead to cut the Miami advantage to just a pair, 43-41, but the RedHawks responded with the next seven to push the lead to nine, 50-41.

Armstead knocked down a pair of free throws and Wilson connected on his fifth triple of the contest as the Huskies cut the Miami lead to four, 50-46.

After a trifecta from Armstead brought the Huskies within a pair, 51-49, Miami scored the next 10 to take a 61-49 lead with 7:24 remaining.

Back-to-back triples from Armstead and Wilson, along with a tip-in from Wilson, cut the Miami lead to just four with just under five minutes to play, but the RedHawks closed the game with an 11-2 run to earn their first conference victory.

Geovonie McKnight led Miami with 18 points; Rod Mills and Ali Barnes each added 11 and Dion Wade chipped in 10 points.

The Huskies will return home on Tuesday, Feb. 2, as they host Buffalo. Game time against the Bulls is scheduled for 8 p.m.
