Iowa and Northwestern lose New Year Day bowl games

Christian McCaffrey closed out a phenomenal season with a game-record 368 all-purpose yards plus two touchdowns in number-six Stanford's 45-16 blowout win over fifth-ranked Iowa at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. McCaffrey had 18 carries for 172 yards, caught four passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, and returned a punt 63 yards for a score to lead the Cardinal. Kevin Hogan tossed three touchdowns as 12-and-2 Stanford took a 35-0 lead halftime lead and never looked back.

C.J. Beathard threw two fourth quarter touchdowns as the Hawkeyes got beat soundly. Iowa finishes the year at 12-and-2.

 


The 23rd-ranked Volunteers recorded four interceptions and rushed for five TDs in a season-ending blowout win over number-13 Northwestern, 45-6 at the Outback Bowl in Tampa.  Jalen Hurd led the charge with 130 yards and a score, while Joshua Dobbs passed for 166 yards and rushed for two TDs.  Evan Berry closed out the game with a 100-yard interception return for a score as the Volunteers finish at 9-and-4. 

Clayton Thorson and Zack Oliver each tossed two interceptions in the loss for 10-and-3 Northwestern.
