NIU off to a (7-0) start in college basketball

DEKALB, Ill. – Sophomore Marin Maric  recorded his second-straight double-double with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, to go along with a career-best five blocks, as the Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team pushed its record to 7-0 with an 80-58 victory over Chicago State on Wednesday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

Junior Aaric Armstead  added a team-high 14 points, senior Travon Baker (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Consortium) chipped in 11 points and a career-best nine assists and freshman Marshawn Wilson added 10 points to help keep the Huskies unbeaten.

“I think our guys came out very focused,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. “Our defense was exceptional at times. Anytime you can be up 15 at halftime that means you probably took care of the basketball, defended well and made some plays offensively.”

The Huskies dominated the game inside, outscoring Chicago State 49-18 in the paint. NIU shot 51.6 percent (33-of-64) in the contest while holding the Cougars to just 30.5 percent (18-of-59) shooting.

NIU raced out to a 9-3 lead in the opening five minutes as Baker scored seven of the first nine to push the Huskies to the early advantage.

Chicago State (3-5) pulled within four, 14-10, until a 7-2 burst by the Huskies gave NIU a nine-point cushion, 21-12, with just under nine minutes to play before the break. Freshman Laytwan Porter opened the burst with a triple, Maric added a basket and junior Michael Orris  added a pair from the charity stripe.

Orris finished with four points to go along with seven assists.

The Huskies took their first double-digit lead of the night on a quick 6-0 run, ignited by an alley-oop from Orris to Armstead. Freshman Levi Bradley  converted a layup and Armstead added another basket as NIU led 29-16.

The Cougars closed the half with three free throws to cut the NIU lead to 39-24 at the intermission. Baker led all scorers with nine points at the break as the Huskies held Chicago State to just 21.7 percent (5-of-23) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

After the intermission the Huskies used a 10-2 burst to take a 49-26 lead less than 90 seconds into the second half. Armstead scored eight of the 10, including two triples, as the Huskies took a 23-point lead.

Chicago State cut the deficit back to 15, 32-37, until a 12-3 run by the Huskies increased the lead to 64-40 just before the midway point of the second half to put the game out of reach for good.

Elliott Cole scored a game-high 17 points to lead Chicago State; Trayvon Palmer added 10 points for the Cougars.

NIU will open a two-game road trip on Friday night, Dec. 4, as the Huskies travel to Missouri. Game time against the Tigers is slated for 7 p.m..
