Matt Carpenter hit a lead-off home run and the Cardinals cruised to a 7-0 shutout of the Rockies at Busch Stadium. Jhonny Peralta added a two-run shot while Stephen Piscotty drove in two in the win. Michael Wacha fired seven frames and struck out seven to improve to 12-and-4 as St. Louis improved to 6-and-3 on its current homestand. Kyle Kendrick lasted one inning before being lifted with right shoulder inflammation to slip to 4-and-12. Carlos Gonzalez doubled in the loss as Colorado was held to just six hits. The Rockies have dropped three straight.
The Cardinals also acquired pitcher Jonathan Broxton from Milwaukee for a minor league outfielder. Broxton is (1-2) for the season and will be used in the bullpen.
