Kyle Hendricks and three relievers combined on a three-hitter as the Cubs blanked the Mets, 1-0, in the opener of a three-game set in New York. Hendricks struck out six over six innings to improve to 3-and-4. Jason Motte worked a perfect ninth for his third save. Matt Szczur plated the game's only run on a double in the sixth for Chicago, which stopped a five-game skid. Jon Niese allowed the run during his seven-inning start to fall to 3-and-8. New York had won its previous four.
Game #2 in the series is tonight.
