NFL quarterback Russell Wilson brings passing academy to NIU

NFL All-Pro quarterback Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks made a stop at NIU in DeKalb Thursday as he brought his passing academy to the area.

Over 400 kids from High School to Grade School attended the event held at Huskie Stadium.

Wilson has led Seattle to 2 straight Super Bowl games. They were World Champions in 2014 while losing in the final seconds earlier this year to New England.

The All-Pro quarterback said that the goal of the camp is to teach the kids the fundamentals of football along with talking about life. He said that if he has an impact on 1 child, the event is worth it.

Wilson also stressed the hands on approach for the academy. With his name on the event, he wants it to be unique compared to other football camps.

1 reason Wilson chose NIU for his passing academy was Athletic Director Sean Frazier. They become friends when both were at the University of Wisconsin.

Frazier said that the academy is a right fit for NIU and the community in helping kids in the area.

NIU Head Football Coach Rod Carey was also pleased to have the camp in DeKalb. He said it's not too oftern you have a 2-time Super Bowl quarterback come to NIU and run an event like this.

Carey was also glad that current and former Huskie players helped run the academy today for the kids.

Wilson plans to take his passing academy around the country in helping children learn about football and life in general. He has not ruled out the event returning NIU next summer.
