Adam Wainwright tossed six shutout innings as the Cardinals topped the Cubs 3-0 in the first game of the 2015 MLB season from Wrigley Field. Wainwright struck out six and allowed five hits for the win and Trevor Rosenthal notched the save with three punch outs in the ninth. Jason Heyward went 3-for-5, doubled twice and stole a base in his Cardinals debut, while Matt Holliday tallied two RBI. Jon Lester lasted just four-and-a-third-innings in his first start as a Cub, allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts for the loss. Five different players recorded a hit in defeat including doubles from Dexter Fowler, David Ross and Chris Coghlan.
Game #2 of the series is Tuesday night.
The White Sox will open the season against the Royals in Kansas City this afternoon. Jeff Samardzija will get the start in the opener of the three-game set for Chicago. Kansas City will counter with Yordano Ventura. First-pitch is at 3:10.
