College Basketball

DEKALB, Ill. -- Redshirt senior center Jordan Threloff  scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the NIU men’s basketball team claimed an 86-56 victory over Aurora on Saturday in the regular season opener at the NIU Convocation Center. Sophomore guard Aaric Armstead  also added 17 points as the Huskies won their season opener for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

NIU shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field in the contest and out-rebounded Aurora, 56-25, in the victory. The Huskies converted 28-of-35 trips to the free-throw line (80 percent) while the Spartans were just 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

“A big key for us today was to pound the ball inside and I thought we did a great job of that,” said NIU head coach Mark Montgomery. “We shared the ball, we played hard, we played with great energy and we came away with the win.”

The Huskies recorded 17 offensive rebounds leading to 27 second chance points while only allowing five second chance points to Aurora.
