Jose Quintana struck out 13 over seven-plus innings of one-run ball as the White Sox downed the Twins 5-1 in the opener of a doubleheader at U.S. Cellular Field. Quintana moved to 8-and-10 while Alexei Ramirez smacked a two-run homer. Jose Abreu was 2-for-3 with a run for Chicago. Phil Hughes fell to 15-and-10 after striking out 11 in seven-plus frames of five-run ball for Minnesota. Chris Parmelee drove in the lone run for the Twins.
Dayan Viciedo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift the White Sox to a 7-6 win and a sweep of a doubleheader over the Twins from U.S. Cellular Field. Jose Abreu hit a solo homer and scored three runs for Chicago, which has won four straight. Avisail Garcia smacked a three-run homer for the Sox. Jake Petricka got the win. Oswaldo Arcia hit a three-run shot while Trevor Plouffe also went deep for Minnesota, which has lost four in-a-row. Glen Perkins took the loss.

Felix Doubront held the Pirates in check for six innings and grabbed the win as the Cubs took a 6-4 victory on the road at PNC Park. Doubront allowed four hits and struck out one in the shutout effort with Hector Rondon earning his 24th save. Javier Baez hit a two-run home run in the win and Matt Szczur added a solo shot. Jeff Locke allowed three runs in five-and-a-third-innings to take the loss. Travis Snider went deep in defeat and Russell Martin drove in three runs. The Pirates lead the second Wild Card spot by a game-and-a-half.
