Greg shares wife's recipe for "Revel Bars"
the brithday treat Greg's co-workers held him hostage for:
(it's ok... Greg is free now)
Crust and Topping:
2 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup butter softened
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
3 cups quick cooking oats
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
Filling:
1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (1 pkg)
2 tbsp butter
2 tsp vanilla
Preheat oven to 350*F. Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the eggs and vanilla. Combine the oats, flour, baking soda and salt. Stir the oat mixture into the butter mixture. Pat 2/3 of the mix into the baking pan. Reserve the other 1/3 for the topping.
In a medium saucepan, heat sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, butter over low heat, stir until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
Spread the chocolate mixture onto the crust. Dot with remaining oat mixture.
Bake for 30 minutes. Let cool, then cut into bars.

Did you know that...

  • a Rochelle greenhouse was for years a supplier of roses of the Tournament of Roses parade?
  • when a young Chicago entreprenuer sought a printer for his new gentleman's magazine in the late 1950's, Rochelle Printing took the job?
  • Rochelle's very 1st piece of fire fighting equipment, a hand-drawn hose cart pulled by 4 men, was sold to 20th Century Fox for the movies?
  • the Lincoln Highway which bisects Rochelle was the nation's first transcontinental highway or that the very first gas station on the Lincoln Highway sits in Rochelle?
  • President Ronald Reagan played high school basketball in our gymnasium?
  • our city got its name when a group of local men sitting at the drug store (just as they do today!) looked up on a shelf and chose the name from a jar of Rochelle Bath Salts?
  • the asparagus fields now home to the Tilton Park subdivision were once harvested by Nazi prisoners of war housed at Rockford's Camp Grant?
  • Rochelle has been the summer vacation destination of Chicago senior citizens for nearly 40 years?
  • Rochelle's very first doctor was a woman who delivered babies in her home?
  • Rochelle is home to Oscar-nominated actress Joan Allen, star of films like Nixon, Peggy Sue Got Married, Face Off, The Notebook, Bourne Supremacy, The Contender and The Crucible?
