Rochelle business looking for sign variance at airport

A business at the Rochelle Municipal Airport has requested a variance for a wall signage on their hangar.

The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended to city officials last night that the 450 square foot vinyl sign be approved for Rochelle Avionics.

The company currently has 4 employees and works on planes. The sign will be located on the north side of the hangar and not visible from the highway. It exceeds the city ordinance by 230 square feet.

Rochelle Avionics has been at the Rochelle airport for the past 4 years.

The commission also talked about the problems for semi-trucks making turns at the north end of the overpass. They want city officials to talk with I-DOT about the problem on Illinois 251.

Jimmy Johns is expected to open today at the Caron Ridge Shopping Center. A representative from Dunkin'
Donuts is also looking at several sites in Rochelle which includes the former Pizza Hut building along with the area of Walmart and the Caron Ridge Shopping Center.

The commission also learned that the city plans to start a marketing campaign to have people live in the community. Over 70 percent of people who work in the Hub City do not live in Rochelle.

City officials were planned to meet with representatives from the 2 railroads in Rochelle next Tuesday to talk about the train horn issue. City Manager David Plyman said the gathering may be postponed due to the federal government shutdown.

The war memorial has also been completed at the Lawnridge Cemetery near the cannon and flag pole.
