There's a little more room in the Winnebago County jail after a record number of inmates were transferred to Stateville Correctional Center. Forty-one inmates were moved from Rockford to Stateville yesterday, including two confessed killers and a man convicted of criminal sexual abuse. The transfers reduce the county jail's population to 917, nearly the lowest number in more than a year. The county says the hiring of more public defenders and prosecutors has also helped to reduce the jail count by speeding up the court process.
