Electric rate debate in Illinois

A debate could be brewing over whether Ameren and ComEd customers will pay more in electric rates. Lawmakers approved the rate hike when they passed a bill earlier this year, giving companies the green light to raise rates a couple times in the next few years. The companies say they need the extra cash to upgrade their electric grid and reduce the possibility of power outages, but Governor Quinn refused to sign the bill. He says people and businesses can't afford to pay more right now. Lawmakers will likely override Quinn's veto.
