The golf season has started in Rochelle.
It may have a new name and under new managerment, but the same 18 holes will be featured this year for area residents to enjoy.
Last month, city officials in Rochelle along with the park district approved an intergovernment agreement between both taxing bodies to purchase the 74 acres and restaurant where the former Country Club had operated. Gredco also agreed to a lease to run the facilty.
The new name of the golf course will be "Fairways". The restaurant will be called "Beacon on the Green". The owner of a current Rockford restaurant will run the facility along with having a catering business.
Lee Prunty, who is an advisor to Gredco, said that this is a community project for local residents.
He stressed that the golf course and restaurant is for the entire public to use in the future.
"Fairways" opened for play last Saturday. "Beacon on the Green" will be open by Memorial Day Weekend.
Prunty said that the restaurant will have some food that is not offered by any business in town.
"Fairways" will have some spring specials in the coming weeks for area golfers. A single membership will remain at $695.
