5 years ago today, tragedy hit the campus of NIU in DeKalb as a gunman enterred Cole Hall and killed 5 students and injured 21 others before taking his own life.
It was the darkest day in the 118 year history of the university. The gunman was a former student at NIU.
A ceremony will take place this afternoon on campus to remember the victims of the shooting. Governor Pat Quinn will join the families of the victims in DeKalb to lay a wreath in memory of each life that was lost in the shooting.
Cole Hall has since been renovated and opened for students at NIU last year. A memorial is also outside the building for the 5 students who lost their lives 5 years ago.
