Gas prices for this time of year are at record levels in Illinois. Triple-A Chicago reports that the statewide average of three-dollars-69-cents a gallon today is up 37-cents from a month ago and 17-cents from a year ago. The average price for January, three-dollars-38-cents per gallon was 12-cents below the record high set in January 2012. The motor club says the high prices during a normally low-demand time of the year are the result of rising crude prices, decreasing supplies and issues at some local refineries.
Gas prices in Rochelle have increased by as much as 40 cents a gallon for unleaded fuel during the past 2 weeks.
