The city of Dixon is suing its outside auditor for not alerting them to the 20-year, 54-million-dollar embezzlement scheme carried out by former city comptroller Rita Crundwell. The city claims the auditor, CliftonLarson, failed to make simple connections that would have uncovered fake state invoices Crundwell submitted to City Hall. CliftonLarson resigned as Dixon's auditing firm in 2005 in order to keep other city business. The company claims the type of audit it did for Dixon did not require the kind of detail needed to uncover the fraud. Crundwell is scheduled to be sentenced next week and faces up to twenty years in prison.
