Winter weather causes fatal crash in Ogle County

An icy highway was the cause of a crash last Sunday afternoon which claimed the lives of a Stillman Valley couple.

Pronounced dead at the scene were 63-year old Arthur Nelson along with his wife, 62-year old Teresa Nelson.

The accident took place near the intersection of Route 72 and Rothwell Road a short time after 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Arthur Nelson was traveling west bound on Route 72 when the car left the pavement. The vehicle traveled 115 feet in the ditch before striking a tree.

Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn said that results from yesterday's autopsy indicated no medical problems for Nelson. He said that inclement winter weather caused the crash.

Freezing rain was hitting the area at the time of the accident
