President Obama supports a plan to legalize gay marriage in Illinois. In fact, a White House spokesperson says the president would vote in favor of the measure if he were still a member of the Illinois Senate. The proposal will come up for a vote this week when the Senate returns to Springfield. Democratic leaders believe they have enough support to pass the bill and send it to the House. If the House also passes the plan, and if Governor Quinn signs it, Illinois will become the tenth state in the nation to give same-sex couples the right to marry.
