The U.S. Department of Transportation wants data-recording "black boxes" required for all new cars and light trucks. Under the proposal, all auto manufacturers would have to install "event data recorders" in their vehicles beginning in September of 2014. Transportation officials say the so-called "black boxes" would track numerous crash-related information, including vehicle speed, any brake activation, and whether a seat belt was buckled. Officials say the boxes would be helpful in investigating traffic accidents, though the proposal is likely to cause consumer privacy concerns.
