Officials at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta held a Grand Opening Ceremony yesterday for their new Student Center.
The building has been open for about a month as the project came about after voters in the Kishwaukee College district passed a 2010 referendum.
Kish President Dr. Tom Choice said that the response from the students has been great. The facility includes a new bookstore along with a cafe and meeting rooms for students.
The project also includes a geothermal system which has 150 wells that will keep the building temperature at 55 degrees for the entire year.
Kishwaukee Community College opened in the fall of 1968 as it had 608 students. The college now has 10,500 full and part-time students.
Guest speakers during yesterday's ceremony included former Kish Presidents Dr. Norm Jenkins and Dr. Dave Louis.
The renovation work at the college has also began. That project should be completed in about a year dealing with classroom space.
