Researchers at Southern Illinois University are trying to determine if fishing could be a substantial source of revenue in the southern part of the state. SIU researchers are already busy trying to battle the Asian carp, and are investigating what economic benefit could be derived from the highly invasive species. One proposal is to build an Asian carp fishery or processing plant along the Ohio River to help promote research into controlling the fish while bringing jobs to the region. SIU's Rex Duncan, director of community development and outreach at the school, says the area's great fishing spots have not yet been fully developed as a commercial enterprise.
