Area businesses are expected to be busy today as it's "Black Friday", the largest shopping day of the year.
Here in Rochelle, no local stores opened on Thanksgiving day for area shoppers. The Big R store did open an hour early and have numerous specials for their customers.
Walmart began their sales at 8 last night. Cars were parked around the store and even on the entrance road for the special buys.
The holiday shopping season is officially here and according to the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, many of the state's businesses will bring in about 30-percent of their revenues between now and the end of the year. Long lines formed outside stores like Walmart, Sears, and Best Buy as shoppers hoped to cash in on some of the biggest deals of the shopping season. And even though customers will get some of the best deals today, IRMA Communications Director Peter Gill says the sales will continue for the rest of the year as retailers fight for their business. And with an improved unemployment rate over this time last year, Gill says people may be looking to spend more money.
