More jobs expected at Nippon Sharyo in Rochelle

Nippon Sharyo in Rochelle expects to add more jobs to their local plant after getting a 352 million dollar contract to manufacture 130 railcars for California and the Midwest.

Governor Pat Quinn along with Secretary of Transprotation Ray LaHood made the announcement yesterday as 42 cars will be built for California while the remainder will go for Illinois, Missouri, and Michigan. The new cars are designed to operate at speeds up to 125 miles per hour.

The train cars are for Amtrak routes. They will be delivered between 2015 and 2018.

The announcement of this project was made last September.

Workers at Nippon Sharyo are currently working on cars for the Metra rail system in Chicago.
