Body found in Rock River near Byron (Updated)

Ogle and Winnebago County authorities continue to investigate the body which was found in the Rock River last Friday afternoon near Byron.

Officials have confirmed that the woman found in the water is 30-year old Katrina Smith of Machesney Park.

Smith was last seen on October 22nd when she left her home to run an errand. Her car, purse, and cell phone were later found near a park in Winnebago County.

Dental records were used to confirm the identity of the body. The exact cause and time of Smith's death is unknown at this time. An autopsy on the body was done Saturday. Officials are waiting for results from the toxicology report which may take a few weeks.

Ogle County officials say that Smith was in the Rock River for a period of time. The body had begun to decompose.

She was clothed, but it had faded while in the water.

An off-duty fireman fishing in the Rock River on Friday found the body just south of Byron. Smith was near a tree in the water.
