NIU officials plan to put together a search committee in the process of hiring a new president for the school.
During his State of the University address in October, 67-year old John Peters announced that he will step down from the position in June of 2013.
Peters has been President at NIU since June of 2000. Peter's last day will give him 13 years as President at NIU.
Among his achievements during the past several years, the list includes 5 new buildings on campus and an expanded honors program for students.
Peters will also be remembered on how he handled the shooting which took place on February 14th of 2008 in which 5 students were killed and 16 others injured at Cole Hall. The gunman also took his life.
Cole Hall was closed until January of this year following a renovation project. A memorial for the 5 students is also outside the building.
Peters said that he will still be involved with fund raisers for NIU after he steps down as president.
