Sheley found guilty

A Whiteside County jury has found 33-year old Nicholas Sheley of Sterling guilty in the killing of a 93-year old man in the summer of 2008.

The jury which had 8 men and 4 women found Sheley guilty of 8 counts of 1st degree murder and 1 count of home invasion and residential burglary in the killing of Russell Reed of Sterling.

The jury trial lasted 7 days. Testimony ended on Monday with closing arguments yesterday. Sheley did not testify during the trial.

Police say that Sheley had beaten Russell to death and then stuffed his body into the truck of a car.

This is the 2nd conviction of murder against Sheley. He was found guilty in the murder of a Galesburg man which he received a sentence of life in prison.

The killing spree in 2008 also included 1 child and 3 adults in Rock Falls and an Arkansas couple in Missouri that Sheley has been charged with.

A sentencing hearing date has been set for January 16th in Morrison.
