Teen identified in Rockford Police shooting

Rockford police have identified the 18-year who was shot and killed by 3 police officers on Thursday.
Logan Bell was involved with the altercation with police.

The officers involved in the shooting who have been placed on administrative leave are Sergeant Andre Brass who has been with the department for 20 years and grew up in Rochelle, 12-year veteran Phillip Statler, and Jeremiah Cizerle who has been with the department for 6 years.

The Winnebago County Integrity Task Force is handling the investigation in the shooting. Reports indicate that police received word that Bell was in possession of a handgun and had threatened to harm himself.

When officers arrived on the scene, Bell did have a handgun and also took off running.

The shooting took place in the 1800 block of South Central Avenue. Police say that Bell allegedly raised the handgun toward the officers before they discharged their weapons.

Police have not released any information on how many shots were fired by the officers or if Bell fired his gun.

An autopsy indicated that Bell had been shot several times.

There have been a total of 29 police officer shootings in Winnebago County since 1992. The previous 28 were labeled justified.

This was also the 3rd shooting this year involving police officers in Rockford that resulted in a fatality.
