Peters retires next year at NIU

NIU in DeKalb will have a new president next year.

67-year old John Peters announced yesterday that he plans to step down from the position in June of 2013. He announced his decision following his State of the University address.

Peters has been President at NIU since June of 2000. Among his many achievements during the past several years, the list includes 5 new buildings on campus and an expanded honors program for students.

Peters will also be remembered on how he handled the shooting which took place on February 14th, 2008 in which 5 students were killed and 16 others injured at Cole Hall. The gunman also took his life.

Cole Hall was closed until January of this year following a renovation project. A memorial for the 5 students is also outside the building.

Peters said that he will still be involved with fund raisers for NIU after he steps down as president.

He is the longest-serving public university president in the state. Peter's last day will give him 13 years as President at NIU.
