It was another successful year for the Relay For Life Event in Rochelle as more than $48,000 was raised Saturdayfor the American Cancer Society. This year's theme was "Carnival for a Cure".
Several hundred area residents took part in the 18th Relay which was held at the Helms Athletic Complex.
1 of the big changes in the Relay this year was the time. It was held over a 12 hour period between noon and midnight. Many children and teens were part of the Relay to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.
32 Survivors of cancer participated in the Relay along with 21 teams. 1 of the highlights of the event was the luminary ceremony. Over 300 luminaries were placed around the track to honor those people who have cancer and individuals who lost their battle with the disease.
This year's team winner was "Terry Tunes" who raised more than $10,000. Immanuel Church-Paynes Point finished in 2nd place with over $5,000.
The top award for an individual went to Bill Allen who raised $2,085. 2nd place went to Robert Camplain at $1,025.
The live auction also brought in $2,600.
The goal for the Relay was to raise $50,000 this year. The $48,000 raised will increase with the concessions that were sold along with future donations until August 31st.
The 19th annual Relay For Life is expected to to take place next June at the Helms Athletic Complex.
