Hunters in Illinois have a good shotgun deer season

Deer hunters in Illinois were a bit luckier in the second weekend of shotgun season this year. The 2017 deer numbers are up over last year.
The Department of Natural Resources' Ed Cross says preliminary numbers from the two weekends show hunters bagged more than 80,000 deer in the state, many of them on the second weekend of the season. Cross says the weather had a lot to do with that.
"The first weekend was kind of rainy in some parts of the state. The second season, the four-day deer season [at the beginning of December], the weather was greatly improved," Cross said. "That led to probably more hunters out in general, which led to more potential harvests."
Jackson County in southern Illinois led the state in deer harvest, with just more than 2,303. That's a bit more than the traditional leader in the state, Adams County, which is in far western Illinois. Hunters there got 2,179 deer.
Cross said that the numbers show that Illinois is one of the best deer states in the country.
"We hear stories about people going to Iowa, Missouri or Kansas for big deer," Cross said. "But Illinois, from top to bottom, east to west, has a great deer population."
There are still four more chances for deer hunters this winter, including archery and muzzle loader season, as well as two late season hunts will push Illinois' total deer harvest a bit higher.
