Auto assembly plant will not be built in Rochelle

City officials in Rochelle have learned that a new Toyota and Mazda assembly plant which would include 4,000 jobs will not be built near I-88 and I-39.

The 2 companies had also looked at property near DeKalb for the 1.3 billion dollar facility.

The head of Governor Bruce Rauner's economic development group says that Illinois' pro-union stance probably cost the state a chance for the assembly plant which is scheduled to be in operation by 2021.

Intersect Illinois CEO Mark Peterson says that the state is out of the running because of the failure to adopt a right-to-work law.

Peterson says the 3 states still in the running for the assembly plant are all right-to-work states which means they do not allow union only contracts between workers and employers.

Rochelle's location drew interests in the project since they have 2 major highways and 3 railroads for transportation.

Rochelle Mayor Chet Olson said that the city along with Gredco Director Jason Anderson are keeping their options open with future projects involving companies coming to the Hub City.

Mayor Olson said that 1 of the key features for Rochelle is the city railroad.

The Union Pacific along with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroads also travel through Rochelle with between 80 to 100 trains per week.
