The sheriff in Rockford says the county courthouse won't have any security by the end of the month, unless county leaders change their minds about budget cuts.
Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana yesterday sent a letter to as many as 64 reserve deputies, informing them that they are being laid off on September 30th.
Winnebago County is struggling to bridge a nearly seven million-dollar budget deficit. Reserve deputies handle courthouse security, Caruana said he hopes to maybe convince other deputies to do a security sweep of the courthouse when they can.
