One of downtown Rockford's most historic buildings is facing the wrecking ball after a weekend fire.
Rockford Fire Division Chief Matt Knot said there is nothing left inside of the former Hanley Furniture building at South Main and Chestnut Streets.
Firefighters got the call yesterday afternoon and say they found the building already engulfed in flames. Crews started demolition work yesterday evening. They expect to tear down what's left of the rest of the building today.
It appears the the flames started on the third floor of the empty building. There were no reports of any injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation for the 5-story building.
Smoke and water damage was reported involving businesses located near the former Hanley Furniture facility.
The owner of the building had plans of renovating the structure for future apartments.
