Nippon Sharyo to remain open in Rochelle for the present time

Officials at Nippon Sharyo have informed city officials in Rochelle that at the present time, there are no plans to close their facility.

The company announced earlier this week that around 110 workers will be layed off. It's the second lay off at the plant this year. Around 100 workers lost their jobs back in January.

During this week's program "Let The People Know", Mayor Chet Olson talked about the closing issue. He said Nippon Sharyo has a 2-year warranty on the rail cars they build. The city was told that the company will remain open to handle any maintenance work.

Nippon Sharyo began operations in July of 2012 in Rochelle. It also had layoffs at the plant in 2015 and 2016.

Olson said that the company is still working on new contracts in the future involving possible agreements. They are also dealing with engineering and design issues.

"Let The People Know" is heard on Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 on Good Time Oldies 1060 and rebroadcast Saturday morning at 6:30 on WRHL and Sunday morning at 6:30 on "The Coyote".

Next week's guest will be Rochelle Police Chief Eric Higby.
