School Officials Investigate Student with Gun At Dixon High School

Dixon Police / School Officials Investigate Student with Gun on School Property. Shortly before 10:00 a.m. today, Dixon Police and Dixon Public Schools Administration were investigating a report of a despondent student who possibly brought a firearm onto school property. The initial information provided to Building Administration was that there was a despondent student armed with a handgun in a vehicle outside of Dixon High School.

DHS administration, the Dixon Police School Resource Officer, and additional Dixon Police Officers began an investigation. Officials were able to immediately determine the student was no longer on school property. Additional security measures were put into place, and Dixon Police Officers began searching for the student.

Within approximately 15 minutes Dixon Police were able to locate the student at a residence in Dixon. As a result of the investigation, one handgun and two rifles were located and seized by police. The student was transported to KSB for evaluation. Criminal charges are pending.

Chief Langloss said, “I couldn’t be more impressed with how quickly this information was communicated to school authorities and our school resource officer. They took immediate action to ensure the safety of our students and the despondent young man. We have taken these guns off of the streets and no one was injured.” Dixon Police currently have School Resource Officers assigned to Dixon High School and Reagan Middle School. Langloss added, “By having a police officer in the school who knows the kids and has multiple sources of information, we were able to locate this student immediately. This incident exemplifies how important it is to have a great working relationship with the school and to have officers assigned at the school.”

Superintendent Margo Empen said, “I am very proud of the work of our staff and our police department. The quick action of all involved ensured the safety of our students and staff. We are heavily invested in proactive security measures and work hard to provide a safe environment for our students. I am proud of and want to give credit to the students who provided information and acted quickly in the best interest of their fellow classmates.”

At this time, there is no information to suggest the despondent student planned to harm anyone at the school. No further information is available at this time. Police and School Administrators are confident there is no longer a threat to students at Dixon High School. School operations have resumed as normal. Dixon High School counselors will be available throughout the days ahead should students need assistance and support.
