Creston officials concerend about Cell 1 at the Rochelle landfill

Village officials in Creston are concerned with the future of Cell 1 at the Rochelle landfill.

The original plan was to dig up the area and place a liner to prevent any leakage. Board President Tom Byro said last night that Waste Connections wants to place dirt on top of the Cell and not dig it up.

The village wants a liner for the Cell to prevent water contamination in the ground.

Byro also talked about the smell coming from the landfill. He has received numerous complaints from residents about the problem. He said Rochelle residents can not smell the odor from the landfill.

Byro said that his main concern is the protection of residents in Creston. He plans to put together a resolution that will be sent to city officials in Rochelle about the problems at the landfill. The city council will make the final decision on possible future changes at the location.

The fiscal year 2017 tax levy was approved by the board. The increase is the same as last year at 4.9 percent.

The insurance for the village was tabled since they are still waiting for the final numbers on their coverage. The policy comes to an end on December 31st.

The village is also looking at replacing a couple of fire hydrants in the Creston. The cost would range from $3,275 to $4,600.
