Stalled budget talks could result in 13.5 billion dollars in unpaid state bills

Governor Rauner's budget office predicts the state's backlog of unpaid bills will hit a record 13-and-a-half-billion-dollars if budget talks remain deadlocked.

The comptroller's office announced yesterday that the bill backlog has already reached ten-point-six-billion-dollars. Democrats are calling on the governor to set aside his economic agenda in order to approve a spending plan. Rauner said quick budget fixes will mean nothing in the long term if the state doesn't take steps to help businesses grow and improve the overall economy.
