Following an investigation that last nearly 2 years, former Ogle County Sheriff Michael Harn has been charged with 2 counts of the Class 2 felony offense of theft.
Special Prosecutor Dave Neal said that Harn committed the offense of felony theft during his time in office as sheriff of Ogle County. He said that Harn purchased goods and services with Ogle County funds under the false pretense that the goods and services were to benefit the county. It is alleged that Harn converted those goods and services to his personal benefit between June of 2011 through December of 2014.
Items purchased with Ogle County credit cards or other funds included electronic and boat equipment, weapons, clothing, camera and audio equipment, adult novelty itens, home improvement supplies, outdoor fountains, and computer equipment.
The property had a value between $500 and $10,000.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said he was not surprised the charges were filed following his internal investigation
He said his department has made numerous changes so this does not happen again. Ths includes safeguards in the accounting process.
Harn will appear in court on the felony charges on November 10th in Oregon.
