Illinois looks to ban expulsion for attendance and grades

Schools across the state could soon have to keep students on their rolls, even if those students don't go to school or are failing every class. The Illinois State Board of Education yesterday tossed its support behind a proposed law to stop expulsions over grades and attendance.

Currently schools can drop students older than 17 who don't have D averages or who miss more than 20-percent of school days. State Superintendent Tony Smith says the goal is to keep as many kids in school as possible.
