The Illinois Senate has approved a bill to automatically register Illinoisans to vote when they visit a Secretary of State's facility for a driver's license or state ID. Sponsor Andy Manar said automatic registration would help to get some of the thousands of eligible but unregistered people, including Hispanics and African-Americans, to the polls.
Critics say it opens the door to voter fraud, but the measure passed 42 to 16 and now moves to the Illinois House.
